Head Coach Eddie Papke
We are happy to welcome Coach Eddie Papke to the Northstars for the 2015 season. Coach Eddie started swimming for the Greentree Gators at age fourteen, and started coaching at 16 with the Greentree Gators (5 years) as assistant coach. A decade as head coach in the league has included the Heritage Park Seals (6 years), the Deerfield Bluefins (4 years), and now the Park Paseo Northstars. No experience is greater than coaching excellent athletes and working with their families to make them better competitors and teammates!
Other coaching experience includes 2 seasons with the Concordia University Eagles as a Graduate Assistant Coach while completing a Masters in Coaching and Athletic Administration; coaching the team during some of their best finishes in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletes. Along with 5 seasons coaching the Timberwolves at Northwood High School (3 seasons as Assistant Coach and 2 as Head Coach) including one C.I.F. Championship victory with Coach Rod Hansen in 2004.
As a swimmer, Coach Eddie started with the Gators at age 14. Moving on to swim with Irvine and Northwood High Schools where he served as Team Captain for his sophomore, junior and senior years. His collegiate swimming career included competing for UC Irvine and The University of Washington alongside some of the world’s greatest swimmers at Pac-10 Championships.
When he’s not at the pool deck, Coach Eddie teaches at Jeffrey Trail Middle School in Irvine, and enjoys spending time with his family and friends, and coaching swimming throughout the year with Momentum Aquatics O.C.
Assistant Coaches – 2016 Coaches TBD
If you are interested in joining our team as a paid coach or volunteer coach, please send inquiries to email@example.com.
The Northstars Swim Team also has volunteer opportunities for swimmer coaches. We are looking for dedicated, reliable and motivated teen swimmers, ages 15 – 18, to help our coaches at practices. Though these are not paid positions, these young leaders will earn community service hours reported to their high schools. Swimmer coaches will be expected to pay the registration fee as a swimmer on the team and their parents will still be expected to do the volunteer jobs. Working for the team in a volunteer capacity, however, may lead to job opportunities in the summers that follow.
More information on Volunteer Coaching Requirements:
Volunteer coaches need to complete CPR, Safety Training for Swim Coaches, and Abuse Prevention Training. They would also need to attend a registration session with ISL and complete a volunteer application.
Here’s the link for the CPR training: http://swimoc.com/health-and-safety-services/irvine-swim-league-coaches/irvine-swim-league-arc-cpraed-and-safety-training-combo-cert/
There is more information about the Abuse Prevention Training at the ISL website at http://irvineswimleague.org. The online training is interactive and requires one to complete questions throughout the video. It should take about 40 minutes to complete. The ISL Coaches Coordinator will receive a confirmation once completed.
The dates and times for the new coaches registration are generally sometime in May every year.
Volunteer coaches also need to complete an ISL employment form even though they are considered youth volunteers. ISL is asking that both paid coaches and youth volunteers complete the same application.
